New homes for the homeless – Joy’s Corner

Mico housing

Many of you have been kindly following and praying for the projects I have been initiating in Cambridge to help those who are homeless over many years now. One project, provision of low-cost micro-housing for the homeless, started in 2020, and has taken a long time to come to fruition. As they sometimes do!

The project hit various delays, and there were some “giants” to be slain along the way, which your prayers especially addressed. It involved building homes in a factory using “self-build” technology, preparing a site with utility connections and simple foundations, craning the homes onto the site, finishing off and landscaping.

The factory work was provided by social enterprise New Meaning Foundation, which provides disadvantaged young people with training and employment experience. Site work was carried out by local design and construction firms, too many to name. We raised all the funds from various private sources.

And now I am very pleased to say that the “homes have landed” on a piece of land at Hills Avenue and Baldock Way in Cambridge, that we have had officially renamed as Joy’s Corner. The picture was taken the day after the homes arrived, and before all the fencing and landscaping had started. We are working on the first resident moving in before Christmas.

And we have an Open Day on Friday 29th November 1.30pm to 3.30pm, to which we have invited all those that have supported us. A rare chance to view before residents arrive. There will be refreshments and former Mayor and now Exec Cllr for Housing Gerri Bird will say a few words.

Any of you is most welcome to pop by and see the fruits of your prayer labours! But please continue to hold this work in your prayers as we bring this first scheme into operation and start work on further such schemes. I have a personal hope that each scheme is embraced by local churches, and that all residents will be “surprised by joy”.

With all blessings
