Mission Focus for November - John Huntingdon's Charity
The John Huntingdon Charity supports individuals and families living in and around Sawston or those with strong connections to the village.
JHC Support service
Advice is available about benefits (including Universal Credit, PIP applications and disabilities), housing, homelessness and small debts.
Housing and property
The charity has a stock of 34 alms-houses in Sawston which are managed by Cambridge-based Hundred Houses Society. JHC has also built up a strong relationship with Great Shelford Parochial Charities who own 53 alms-houses for those that have a connection to Great Shelford.
JHC Grants
JHC support local people for whom a small grant for practical items can make a world of difference to their wellbeing. For example, grants available to individuals and families on low incomes can be used for essential items including cookers, washing machines or beds.
Allotments
JHC’s allotments in Mill Lane, Sawston include over 60 plots. They’re a great place to meet new people from around the village who you may not come across in another setting. The charity has also developed a community orchard (fruit trees planted in 2012).
Working with children & young people
JHC is especially proud of their relationships with local schools. In the 1990s John Marven, former Principal of Sawston Village College, joined JHC’s Board of Trustees where his expertise guided our vision for supporting children and families. The charity developed the Sawston Nursery building as a place where the disadvantaged had the same opportunities as others, with young children getting extra attention when required.
Local Networks
JHC collaborates with a number of organisations including Cambridge Citizens’ Advice, Granta Medical Centre, South Cambridgeshire District Council, Sawston’s schools and the Village College, and the Children’s Centre.
How can we support the charity?
